The Motor Vehicle Crash (MVC) Case Definition Public Use Dataset (PUD) contains EMS activation records that met one or more standardized MVC case definitions (car/truck/bus, motorcycle, pedal cycle, or pedestrian) based on NEMSIS v3.4 data. Two datasets are provided: a core activation‐level file (mvc_activations) with one row per EMS activation, including derived variables indicating which MVC category/case definition was met, and a supplemental long‐format file (mvc_1M) that contains one‐to‐many data elements (e.g., causes of injury, secondary impressions, alcohol/drug indicators, or procedures). These datasets are derived from the NEMSIS Research Dataset and include both direct and computed elements related to demographics, primary impressions, disposition, response times, and injury characteristics. The Patient Death Case Definition Public Use Dataset (PUD) contains EMS activations in which the patient died during the EMS call. This dataset contains 13 tables due to the one-to-many relational nature of 12 of the variables. All one-to-one variables are provided in the table “PatientDeathPUD_1to1.” Specific variable documentation is included in the zip file titled “ReadMe.txt” and NEMSIS Case Definitions.

The Behavioral Health Case Definition Public Use Dataset (PUD) contains EMS activation records that met one or more standardized behavioral health case definitions based on NEMSIS v3.4 data. Eleven datasets are provided: one activation‐level file (BehavioralHealthPUD_1to1) with one row per EMS activation, plus ten supplemental long‐format files that each contain one‐to‐many data elements (e.g., barriers to care, medications, secondary impressions, delays, protocols, alcohol/drug indicators, and causes of injury). Together, these files include both direct and computed elements from the NEMSIS Research Dataset, capturing patient demographics, acuity, impression, destination, and behavioral health–related clinical characteristics. The Cardiac Arrest Case Definition Public Use Dataset (PUD) contains EMS activation records where any symptom or impression indicates cardiac arrest and the cardiac arrest occurred prior to EMS arrival with a presumed cardiac etiology (or the etiology is blank), or the cardiac arrest occurred after EMS arrival with a presumed cardiac etiology. This case definition differs slightly from the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES), which aims to identify cardiac arrests where resuscitation was provided. CARES further narrows the definition, and therefore the PUD data, to include only cases where resuscitation was provided by a 911 responder or the patient received an AED shock from a bystander. The Influenza-like Illness Case Definition Public Use Dataset (PUD) contains EMS activation records that met one or more standardized influenza-like illness case definitions based on NEMSIS v3.4 data. Twelve datasets are provided: one activation-level file (InfluenzaPUD[year]_1to1) with one row per EMS activation, plus eleven supplemental long-format files that each contain one-to-many data elements (e.g., additional symptoms, barriers to care, medications, vitals, procedures, and response delays). These files draw directly from the NEMSIS Research Dataset and include both raw and computed elements related to demographics, clinical presentation, acuity, impression, disposition, procedures, and physiologic findings relevant to influenza-like illness. The Trauma Case Definition Public Use Dataset (PUD) includes EMS activations from 2023 that met the trauma case definition criteria, and provides both activation-level variables and multiple supplemental long-format datasets. The main TraumaPUD_1to1 file contains one row per activation with core demographic, dispatch, transport, acuity, disposition, and scene context variables. Additional files include one-to-many information on triage criteria, history elements, medications administered, procedures performed, delays, symptoms, impressions, vitals, and other trauma-relevant clinical descriptors. Together, these datasets offer a comprehensive view of trauma-related EMS encounters across the NEMSIS data standard. Element definitions can be referenced in the NEMSIS data dictionary.
