2020 Mid-Year Public-Release Research Dataset

The 2020 Mid-Year Public-Release Research Dataset is a subset of the National EMS Database that is the repository for EMS data collected from U.S. States and Territories. NEMSIS is a national standard for how patient care information resulting from an emergency 9-1-1 call for assistance is collected. The dataset includes 19,749,812 EMS activations submitted by 10,620 EMS agencies servicing 47 states and territories. This mid-year release is provided due to overwhelming requests from researchers interested in investigating EMS response during the Spring outbreak of COVID-19. The dataset does not contain information that identifies patients, EMS agencies, receiving hospitals, or reporting states. Click for more information on how to access the dataset.

Infectious Disease National Custom Elements

Click Here (updated 02/01/2021) to view a guidance document detailing these National Custom Elements and providing a description of their intended use. The NEMSIS TAC has worked with EMS stakeholders to identify needed National Custom Elements to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. These custom elements are made available to EMS agencies and States in an effort to standardize the documentation and coding of recent travel and potential exposures related to an infectious disease, like COVID-19. The National Custom Elements may be found in the lower right-hand corner of the NEMSIS V3 Custom Element Library.

NHTSA’s Office of EMS Data Use Video

“The NHTSA Office of EMS has created an engaging two-minute animated video that follows EMS data from the moment they are collected at the scene to when they are analyzed and used to improve care from the local to the national level. The video, intended for all members of the EMS community, highlights the importance of collecting and sharing accurate information, and the numerous ways agencies, policymakers, researchers and others use it.”  Check out the EMS Data Use Video
